Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the alpaca yarn and organic merino wool yarn?

Alpaca is fuzzier, warmer and a bit heavier than the wool. The wool is coarser, and a more structural. Because alpaca is fuzzier, some people find it a bit more itchy than the merino wool. However, some customers have stated the opposite, too.

The organic merino wool is available in two thicknesses: sport weight and fingering weight.  The sport is thicker and heavier, it is also a bit thicker than the alpaca.  The fingering weight is lighter and thinner than both the alpaca and the sport weight wool.

The wool comes in unbleached ivory white.  I usually have some dyed with black walnut husks (organically grown on our farm).  Please ask to see the shades of brown that are available. The alpaca color choices are shown in the color chart.

The alpaca pills less than wool.

What is the turn around time?

I will usually be able to make items in a few weeks. Smaller, and simpler items such as hats, mittens, leg warmers, and mini skirts will take about 1#2 weeks and larger items will take 3-4 weeks.  Complicated items will take even longer.  During the fall and early winter the turn around time can be longer depending on the amount of orders.

Why wear all natural clothing?

All natural clothing is better for you and the world we live in.  There are many health benefits to wearing wool clothes. Since there are no dyes used in the alpaca clothing, there are no added chemicals to put on your skin (the largest organ of our bodies) and none added to the environment. The natural dyes harvested and used to dye the wool, are not harmful to the environment either, however, water is used to dye the yarn.

Wearing synthetic clothing is harmful to yourself, and to the earth. When synthetic clothing begins to breakdown and fall apart, it’s particles don’t degrade, and have been found in oceans and many other natural environments. Be kind to yourself and the earth…. wear natural clothing! There has also been proof that synthetic clothing can cause cancer.
